Lahad Datu: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) wants the Government to come up with a decision to control the growth of the 'Palau' communities in the East Coast. Its Chief Executive Officer Noor Alam Khan A Wahid Khan said the issue pertaining to the Palau community should be taken seriously as it will cause the local community to be insecure.

He said besides causing social problems such as begging and public vandalism, the Palau community have begun constructing illegal houses by the beach and islands which will give the impression that illegal immigrants are welcome to enter the country freely and do as they wish without action by the authorities.

"Esscom has given attention to this matter since 2013 and we have also carried out surveillance to identify their numbers.

"We have brought up this issue at state and federal level for action to be taken as this matter should not be ignored," he said.

"The community has the potential to be a threat to the nation as well as being connected to foreign criminals so Esscom has taken action and helped district officers to overcome this problem but the final say lies with the Government," he added.

Meanwhile, District Officer Iman Ali said the Local Authorities (PBTs) have taken action at district level but needs cooperation from other parties as well.

Iman said this problem, if ignored, will affect the tourism image of Lahad Datu as the presence of the community will make tourists shun Lahad Datu. - Efa Rizan
