Sabah officials receive praise

Kota Kinabalu: Four badminton officials from Sabah led by Anthony Linggian, who is the only BWF (Badminton World Federation) referee in the country, were praised by Sabah Badminton Association (SBA) for their role in the recent Malaysia Junior Badminton Open, 2017 in Kangar, Perlis from September 5-9.

In a statement released on Wednesday, SBA Secretary Steve Jay said Anthony, who had been appointed by Badminton Asia was given the task to assess the performance of Japanese referee Toi Tsutomu for Badminton Asia referee accreditation.

Vickneswaran N. Salapan from Kota Kinabalu, on the other hand, was appointed as tournament deputy referee and has gained the much needed experience in managing international championships from his role while international level three umpires Noratikah Daud from Beaufort and Daniel Nicholas Yap from Kota Kinabalu performed extremely well and are looking forward for promotion to international umpire status in the future.

Meanwhile, Steve said Sabah players who took part in the Under-19 category all lost in the early rounds despite trying their best.

In the boys singles first rounds, Eddrall Atek lost to South Korean Hyeon Seung Park 22-20, 22-20, 21-18 and Ilyeo Arvin Luaran lost 7-21, 10-21 to another Korean Kim Moon Jun.

Suraya Voo was the only one managed to get past the opening round with merits after defeating Jenny Zhu from New Zealand 19-21, 21-17, 21-14 in the girls singles before losing to Indonesian Choirunnisa Choirunnisa 17-21, 21-22 in the next round while teammate Nursyaqiqah Reguil fell to Japan's Nanami Akechi 11-21, 6-21.

In the doubles events, Eddrall Atek and M. Norzaihani Hafizi Rozaini received a bye in the first round but lost to Indonesian pair Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin 18-21, 8-21 in the second round.

The girls doubles pair of Noorsyaqiqah Reguil/Surraya Voo, who also had a bye in the first round, were defeated in the next round by Dhea Bunga Anjani/Dinda Dwi Cahyaning from Indonesia 8-21, 8-21.
