Penampang: Sabah Pakatan Harapan Youth is calling on the young to be more aware of bread and butter issues as these affect their livelihood and future.Director of elections of Sabah PKR Youth Corp, Adam Fistibal Wilfrid, said in the buildup of the coming general election many issues have come to the fore but young people must never lose sight on those that matter such as the high cost to own a home.

"Housing, unemployment, GST, minimum wage gap between East and West Malaysia – these are some of the issues that the young actually talk and face daily. They're very concerned because these issues affect them directly more than anyone else," he said.

He pointed out that many young people may not realise there are underlying causes to the issues which may not make any sense.

"They don't realise that statistics have shown there has been a widening gap between the price of houses and materials. It doesn't make any sense to anyone how the price young people have to pay for a house keeps increasing yet the price of materials to build it rises only slightly," he argued.

Adam, who is also the former special officer to Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar, stressed, however, that by being aware of the bread and butter issues and merely talking about it will not change anything unless they take them to the ballot box.

On the part of the PH Youth, he said they have been combining force to raise all the bread and butter issues in the hope that the people, especially young voters, understand that change can happen if they want it to.

"Youths from all the parties in Pakatan Harapan Sabah are united in this task. We've been working as a team because as a young generation we know how it feels like to inherit these issues that were not created by us in the first place.

"All we want is to have the guarantee that we can afford the basic things in life and that we too can raise and feed our family. Right now, at the price houses are sold these days, there's no way we can even own one," he said.

Adam assured that PKR and the PH have the political will to make the changes that young people have been hoping for.

He pointed out that the opposition party has a proven track record of good governance in Selangor and the DAP in Penang.

"Take Selangor for instance. The State is contributing 20 sen to the national GDP, which is huge.

This can be replicated in Sabah," he said. He also called on young people not to be influenced by talks about opposition disunity.

"All of us young know which leaders are credible and genuine. I take myself as an example.

From the age of seven, I already heard about some of their names mentioned by my parents.

Until today, they're still around and still trying to resurrect their political career.

But I can't help asking myself what changes have they done for Sabah. I and many young people are still facing issues the older generation faced when they were my age," he said.

He stressed that sentiments on whether voters should vote for a local or national-based opposition party will only get people nowhere.

"Change can only happen if we have control over the centre of power," said Adam. - Leonard Alaza
