13 Sabah athletes for Asian Masters in China

Kota Kinabalu: Thirteen athletes from Sabah will take part in the 20th Asian Masters Athletics Championship (AMAC) to be held in Rugao City, China from September 24-28.According to Sabah Masters Athletes Association President (Samas) President Aliudin Jumaat , they are part of the 35-member National team and there is a good chance that they will repeat their success story in Singapore last year."We have a very strong squad and we may be able to emulate our AMAC 2016 feat in Singapore with nine gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze," he said here on Tuesday.

Multiple gold medal winner Juliana Gumpil (50-54) who is the current 100 metre Asian record holder is set to lead the challenge , and is expected to repeat her golden feat not just in 100m sprint but also in 80m Hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump.Aliudin (60-64 years) , who won silver in the 2017 World Masters Indoor Athletics Champioships (WMACi) in 60m Hurdles, will defend his High Jump title and he will also be taking part in the 100m Hurdles and 300m Hurdles.Another gold medal hopeful is Julius Komuning (70-74 years) who won gold in discus last year will take part in Javelin.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The rest of Sabah team members are Tay Yu Eng (W60-64 yrs) Javelin, Discus & Shot Put; Maulani Diman (M50-54 yrs) 100m,200m, Javelin & Shot Put; Christina Labanjing (W60-64 yrs) 100m, High Jump & Triple Jump; Tarmizi Sandhu (M60-64 yrs) Discus, Javelin & Shot Put; Shamry Mohd Ali (45-49) 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles; Maryem Joinol (W55-59) Javelin, Shot Put; Vironica Elau (W55-59) 5000m Walk, 2000m SC; Susanna Hiew (W60-64) 5000m Walk; Daim Gayam (M55-59) 100m, 200m & 400 metre and Paul Anthony Fung (M65-69) 100m & 200 metre.

The team will leave for Shanghai on Sept 22. Aliudin expressed his appreciation to Youth and Sports MInister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Sabah Sports Council and Sabah Sports Board for their continuous supports to ensure the team preparation were run smoothly.
