Kota Kinabalu: John Michael O'Toole of the United States fired an impressive opening round six-under-par 66 to take a three-shot lead at the PGM EurAsia Sabah Championship, Wednesday. The 24-year-old returned with a flawless card to lead countryman Paul Harris, Choo Tze Huang of Singapore and Thai duo Nattawat Suvajanakorn and Jakraphan Premsirigorn.

Amir Nazrin was the best placed local player in eighth place following a round of 71 at the RM200,000 (approximately US$44,600) Asian Development Tour (ADT) event which is staged at the Sabah Golf and Country Club.

O'Toole, who finished sixth on the ADT Order of Merit last year, took a more laid-back approach and was rewarded with four birdies and one eagle which he holed from seven-feet on hole two.

"I consider myself an aggressive player but I want to be laid back. The less you gamble on the golf course, the less stress you have. I'm trying to be more consistent but sometimes when you want to play aggressively, you have to swallow your pride. At the end of the day, you are not giving any shots back," said O'Toole.

"I don't want to be aggressive. I'm just going to wait for the birdie chances and play percentage golf," added the one-time ADT winner.

The PGM EurAsia Sabah Championship was founded through the cooperation between the Asian Tour, European Tour and PGM Tour in organising the EurAsia Cup, a team match-play event between Asia and Europe.

By featuring on the ADT schedule, the PGM EurAsia Sabah Championship will offer Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points. The winner will receive six OWGR points while the top six players and ties will also earn points based on a sliding scale.
