Labuan: PKR has commended the Fire and Rescue Department here for its swift action to inspect the safety standards of tahfiz schools on the island. Saying such move provided a relief to parents and others who felt anxious after the tragic tahfiz school fire in Kuala Lumpur recently which claimed 23 lives, Labuan PKR Chairman Simsudin Sidek said:

"There are five tahfiz schools on the island catering mainly for students from poor families and orphans, and we have been told that the schools lacked funding.

"What is feared is such situation may lead to some compromising on safety and security standards of the schools and this may cause mishaps to occur.

"Prevention is better than cure. The authorities should help solve the concerns of these schools which play an important role," he added.

The tahfiz schools are located at Bandar Kerupang, Meriding, Kampung Muslim and Kiamsam.

The oldest was built in 1966 and has an enrolment of 65 students.

The recent inspection of the schools by the department revealed that two of them did not meet the required standards and were kept under watch.

On another note, Simsudin said the department should also make similar inspections on other establishments such as pre-schools, kindergartens, play schools or nurseries.

He noted that most of the premises were located in residential housing estates and some were privately-run.

Recently many such establishments had cropped up due to increased demands from working parents.

"It is difficult to find maids and also expensive. Due to this, many working parents prefer sending their children to such establishments which serve as a daycare centre," he said.

Simsudin said some of the establishment also took care of babies and it was important that their safety standards were constantly monitored as well. - Sohan Das
