MoU to set up the first National Innovation Centre in Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sabah Institute of Development Studies (IDS) to establish the first National Innovation and Creative Economy (Nice) Centre in Sabah under YIM.This agreement was inked on Sept 21 (Thursday) by YIM Chief Executive Officer Tany Anthony Kiob and IDS Executive Director Datuk Mohd Hasnol Ayub, witnessed by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister cum YIM Chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau and IDS Chairman Datuk Seri Clarence B. Malakun.

Nice Centre is an innovation-focused commercialisation platform, especially grassroots innovation, with a mission to accelerate the development of local industries.

It is based on the principles of partnership and collaboration, committed to creating a conducive local innovation environment, focusing on the development of youths, guest innovators and local companies towards achieving competitive advantage in every component of the value chain of entrepreneurship and ultimately achieving commercialisation success.

YIM is an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) aimed at driving innovation and creativity among Malaysians, primarily targeting children, youths, women, rural community, disabled and non-governmental organisations.

YIM has embarked on the Grassroots Innovation Movement in 2011 where many awareness programmes, capacity building as well as innovation development were carried out with the support of Mosti.

Among them are Jejak Innovasi Programme, High Impact Programme 6, Kids Invent and Mainstreaming Grassroots Innovation.

IDS is a research institute with expertise in decision-making, including problem-solving research on administrative and socio-economic development, analysis of policy proposals submitted by the public and the conduct of forums and discussions with the aim of soliciting public opinions about the problems and issues that could affect socio-economic development.

YIM and IDS cooperation will open a new chapter in the development of innovation in Malaysia.

It also strengthens networking and collaboration, especially in Sabah, in a mission to encourage Malaysians to make sustainable reforms and solutions to the problems faced by communities at the mission of generating wealth through innovation.

Through the agreement, YIM and IDS can utilise assets, knowledge, skills and expertise in their respective fields to be shared and applied together, especially in the areas of ??Rapid Rural Appraisal, community profiling, research, innovation and commercialisation.

The cooperation is in line with the nation's vision of enhancing the use of the principle of National Blue Ocean Strategy or NBOS and promoting social and economic development in line with the National Transformation 2050 (TN50).
