Kuala Lumpur: Three Malaysian golfers have pledged to put up a sizzling performance before local fans at the upcoming CIMB Classic Golf Tournament from Oct 12-15 at the TPC in Bukit Kiara. The trio are Gavin Kyle Green, Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung.

For Gavin, 23, he is hoping to continue his remarkable feat in the US$7 million (RM 29.640 million) tournament after capturing his maiden Asian Tour title at the Taiwan Masters on Sunday.

"It is a huge deal to me. I'm a little bit more prepared this time. Mentally I'm better. I'm also playing better and it shows in the results," he was quoted as saying in the Asian Tour website www.asiantour.com.

He earned the coveted spot at the CIMB Classic after emerging as the new Asian Tour Order of Merit standings leader following his success in Taiwan despite being ranked 157th in the world.

Sharing the same aspiration was seasoned campaigner Danny Chia who will fall back on his past experience to put up a better show in the event.

Chia qualified for the CIMB Classic a record six times by winning the CIMB National Championship in July which allocated one of the two sponsor's exemptions for Malaysian golfers.

"I'm very happy to play in the CIMB Classic again. My best memory was when I played at the Mines (in Seri Kembangan) with (former number one) Vijay Singh. I'm glad I put on a good show that year.

It was a great experience," added Chia who had a memorable joint 13th finish in the 2011 edition.

Fung, on the other hand, worked extensively hard to improve his tee shots ahead of the annual golf meet which is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Professional Golf Association of Malaysia (PGAM).

"I've been training hard to gain more distance. I've gained about 10 to 13 yards but I'm not hitting it straight enough," added Fung who will be making his third appearance at the CIMB Classic after playing back-to-back events in 2013 and 2014.

He qualified to play in the event after emerging as the highest ranked non-exempt Malaysian at 302nd spot in the latest world ranking issued on Monday. – Bernama
