Kota Kinabalu: Co-operation between Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) Business, Economics and Accountancy Faculty (FPEP) and Tambisan Travel and Tours is set to further boost the tourism potential of Tambisan, Lahad Datu.FPEP dean Assoc. Prof Dr Raman Noordin said the partnership would benefit both sides in terms of research, consultation as well as knowledge transfer between the university and the local Tambisan community.

"Community-based tourism is a sustainable form of tourism that is able to create a big impact and benefit for locals…such programmes will also be able to transform the local socio-economy," he said during the letter of intention (LoI) signing ceremony at UMS, here, Thursday.

"I believe with the expertise from UMS and co-operation from the villagers in Kampung Tambisan, the project will succeed and can be an example for community-based tourism projects in other locations."

Raman hoped the LoI would be further strengthened with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in future.

"This is only the starting point for FPEP and industry players to introduce Tambisan as another tourism spot in the East Coast, apart from Sandakan, Semporna and Tawau," he said.

Tambisan Travel and Tours Managing Director Antin Ismail hoped UMS would provide continuous assistance for the locals to develop the tourism industry in Tambisan.

"As a Kampung Tambisan native, I believe the activities conducted by the locals can be developed as tourism products," he said.

"With the positive involvement and response from the locals on the importance of tourism, I took the initiative to develop tourism in Kampung Tambisan.

"In order to materialise this objective, I contacted UMS for help to enhance awareness on tourism development as well as nature conservation.

"The co-operation between UMS and Tambisan Travel and Tours will provide a guideline to create community-based tourism in Kampung Tambisan."

Antin disclosed that Kampung Tambisan, situated in a rural area of Lahad Datu, comprises a few areas, among them Pulau Tambisan and Tambisan Darat.

"The locals depend on marine and forest produces for their livelihood. The beauty of the island's flora and fauna inspired me to highlight the local lifestyle and culture," he said.

Also present was Political Secretary to the Chief Minister Datuk Armani Mahiruddin. - Ricardo Unto
