More kudos for St Michael's

Penampang: St Michael Secondary School added another victory to its name when its innovation team bagged prizes in the Young Inventors Challenge 2017 (YIC), last week.Competing against 105 teams, the team successfully won a silver medal for its innovation called Chilli Track and second runner-up for Project Paper Writing of MuCKo 2-in-1 insect repellent and disinfectant.

The students behind the inventions were Jerrald Juan Pinso, Fiona Stephen George Loudin, Phoebe Giovanna Kunan, Velvette Rozelle Roger, Steve Clement Zelis, Nur Sabrina Zubaidi, Nicolette MG Kissol, Abigail Balgut Tan, Noel Aris Chua, Ethan Shane Luke Jonioh, Dorallyn Sue Siew Ling, Jordan Maikon Tambaka and Glenn Elvin George.

They were accompanied by teachers Hildah Josephine Kuyun, Cyprian Rian Jokinol, Mariatul Hanis Merani Abdullah, Judith Fidelis Donsia and school principal Jennifer Asing.

The event was organised by the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation that was held at CIDB Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 29.

The event was participated not only by Malaysia but all other Asean countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and Philippines.

There were 480 applications received by the organiser but only 105 teams were shortlisted.

The purpose of this prestigious competition is to build and encourage the creative and inventive capabilities of young people.

It is also aimed to give opportunities to young people who are inventive to promote their ideas to the outside world.

The challenge allowed students to be able to produce original inventions and receive recognition.

It is also aimed at developing their creative and innovative thinking skills and enhance self-esteem and confidence.

"Apart from that, the students will also develop teamwork dynamics to solve problems," said Jennifer.

About the same time last week, the school also won prizes in the 4th International Young Inventors Award (IYIA) held at Universitas Mercu Buana, Jakarta, Indonesia.
