Sabah joins the record release of 482,262 fish fry
Penampang: The State Fisheries Department joined its counterparts nationwide in entering the Malaysia Book of Records, Thursday, by simultaneously releasing 482,262 fish fry of many types, including prawns. The event was held at 14 locations throughout the country and for Sabah, the location chosen by State Fisheries was Taman Tagal Tolungan Sosopon, Kampung Notorus 3TSNP, here.

According to Deputy Director Lu Kien Chee who is in charge of the research station at Babagon, the simultaneous release of fish fry was initially an awareness campaign called "Program Gelombang Nelayan Nasional."

"The record attempt was added afterwards," he said.

The conditions set were simultaneous release exactly at 10am with a target of 400,000 fry and reports of videos and photos must be sent electronically within half an hour to the department's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

The event at Notorus contributed only 1,500 fish fry called Lampan Jawa (scientific name Puntius Gonionotus), with the fry strictly counted by Fisheries staff, witnessed by District Officer Luvita Koisun.

Officiating on behalf of Penampang Barisan Nasional Chief Datuk Donald Mojuntin, Community Development Officer Datuk William Sampil said in the past fish reproduced themselves but with development and population growth, fish fry release became necessary.

He commended the Fisheries Department for its efforts to increase food resources and expressed confidence that the Tagal Committee of the village will take care of both the fish preservation system and the river.

"Last week, we celebrated World Rivers Day and now we continue to observe that event by releasing more fish fry. Getting into the book of records will become a stepping stone to promote the location as a tourism attraction," he said, adding the district has already entered several achievements into the records book such as 43km of river clean-up in 2007.

Earlier, Luvita said the district has 28 registered Tagal Committees and the location chosen for releasing fish fry on Thursday started in 1994 while four eco-tourism products are currently operating.

Pledging to help uplift the tourism sector started by her predecessor, Luvita said the district has recognised the Raft Festival because the purpose is also to preserve, clean up and beautify the riverbanks.

She also said the Government would ensure those who carry out earthwork would include mitigation work to prevent mud pollution of the river.

"In this way, our district can become a tourism destination with our river and fish attraction."

Also present were District Chief, Village Development and Security Committee chairpersons, Tagal Committee and heads of government departments of the district. - Oswald Supi
