Kota Kinabalu: Three Sabah politicians were remanded five days each, beginning Tuesday, to facilitate an on-going Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) probe into alleged abuse of RM1.5 billion in Federal funds meant for rural development projects over a period of six years in the State.Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus issued the remand order against the trio following an application from MACC Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip who applied for seven days for each.

Daily Express understands that Hamid Apdal, a younger brother of Parti Warisan Sabah President Datuk Seri Shafie Apfal, was also called in by MACC officers Tuesday morning, to help in the same investigation.

A MACC source said Hamid later led five anti-graft investigators to his home in Putatan at 3.30pm to search for evidence on the alleged missappropriated funds. The team left at 6pm.

A youth leader from an opposition party was represented by a counsel team led by Martin Tommy with co-counsel Darell Leiking, Loretto Padua Jr, Cedric Choo and Norazmi Alimat.

One Sabah Umno youth leader from Tenom was represented by Arthur Borine, Shahlan Jufri and Mohd Azhier Farhan Arisin while Counsel Hamid Ismail represented the other Umno youth leader from Tawau.

They are being remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) applied by MACC but assisting the investigation under Section 17(1) of the MACC Act which deals with soliciting and receiving gratification from an agent.

The opposition youth leader was first picked up on Sunday at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and later released only to be asked to come to the MACC Sabah office here at 10.30am on Monday.

However, he was later detained at 5pm by MACC on Monday (Oct 9) prior to being remanded for five days as issued by the Magistrate Cindy effective Tuesday (Oct 10), while the other two were detained here and Tawau by MACC on Monday before brought to the Court to be remanded.

Meanwhile, Balitus also granted a three-day remand extension each for an opposition politician and a local businessman whose five-day remand ended Tuesday, following MACC application by Rustam who applied for seven days.

Both were among three people, including a woman former senior officer of a Federal Ministry, who were the first to be detained and remanded by MACC Sabah and MACC Putrajaya over the same issue.

The woman, who was remanded for six days beginning Oct 6 in Putrajaya, was detained with the other two to facilitate investigations. They would be brought to the Court in FT Putrajaya for extension of remand, today (Wednesday).

Over 100 opposition supporters gathered at the Kota Kinabalu Court House from 8.30am to continue giving support to their two leaders who have been remanded by the Magistrate to assist the MACC's graft probe over the alleged misappropriate of RM1.5 billion public funds meant for rural projects in the State.

All five were brought to the Court house at about 12.15pm on Tuesday and the remand process ended at about 3pm.

A team of Light Strike Force (LSF) came into the Court premises in full gear amid chants of "Sabah Ubah, Undi Warisan" and clapping of hands to express support to their leaders who have been remanded.

Food and drinks were distributed to the people there while they waited under the sun for many hours to find out the outcome of the remand process. A police mobile vehicle was also stationed near the Court for any eventualities at the gathering. - Hayati Dzulkifli
