'Help illegals within the law'
Kota Kinabalu: The National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) supports initiatives by various parties to aid illegal immigrants in Sabah under the spirit of the universal human rights covenant, but within the boundaries of certain laws and regulations pertaining to their stay in the state.Suhakam Chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail (pic) said it is the commission's principle to support their rights even though they are non-citizens of the state and country.

"We have to be considerate but there must be regulations to keep everything in order," he said.

During a lecture series hosted by the National Professors Council, he said certain regulations help curb the complications surrounding illegals and locals should not see it as a step back for them, but be more compassionate in helping these 'settlers'.

"Taking care of these people does not mean the state or the country will lose out," he added.

Touching on the education opportunities for these "stateless" children, one Suhakam commissioner participating in the session said there are schools set up for them but it does not have to be a government school and they should not be considered "stateless".

"Proper documentation for them can be worked out under certain regulations so it should not be a problem," he said.

Meanwhile, Razali also said the commission does not support capital punishment as it is a violation of human rights. "The act to revoke the death penalty for drug offences has been a great move and we are working to further reinforce this practice for other offences," he said.

Razali was impressed by the involvement and response of the students in regards to human rights during the dialogue session and is looking forward to another session. - Iffah Dilaney
