6 held over theft of RM29,000 TM cables in Papar

Papar: Police solved three recent cases of stealing Telekom Malaysia cables worth RM29,000, here, when a group of six local men, including the mastermind, was arrested in separate raids early this month.District Police Chief DSP Ladamah Sulaiman said the suspects aged between their 20s and 30s allegedly committed the offence at Jalan Langkawit, near Benoni area, between Sept 19 and 25, this year.

He said a special task force was set up to track down the suspects upon receiving information on the case, including checking premises selling scrap metal, here.

"We found out that the group has taken out the cables from its insulators when we seized the item in several places here.

"We have also apprehended the buyer of the cables and investigating him under Section 413 of the Penal Code for buying and keeping stolen cables," he said here, Friday.

Ladamah said of the six suspects, two have previous conviction and one of them was believed to be the mastermind.

He said all the suspects, who are being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, were taken to the Magistrate Court, here, Thursday for further action.

He said police are still investigating whether the suspects are also linked with other cable stealing incidents here previously. - Hayati Dzulkifli
