Kota Kinabalu: An 18-year-old who bought abortion pills online to kill her unborn baby for fear her parents will find out, has been arrested for alleged baby dumping.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said the girl was arrested after a cleaner found a foetus inside the garbage bin of a toilet at a shopping complex here on Sept 29.

"The suspect consumed the pills over four days. On the fourth day, she aborted her unborn baby, placed it in a plastic bag before disposing of it in a garbage bin," he told reporters, Friday.

He said this was the fifth case involving baby dumping in Sabah this year.

There were three cases during the same period last year. The case is being investigated under Section 318 of the Penal Code.

Chandra advised women facing issues with unwanted pregnancy to seek help from the relevant authorities.

Health Minister Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam had earlier this year expressed concern over the purchase of pills for the purpose of abortion, saying his Ministry would be working with the Customs Department and police to detect their sales.

In July, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim had said a total of 697 baby dumping cases had been recorded from 2010 to December 2016 nationwide, citing police statistics.

She revealed that Sabah was the second highest in terms of cases after Selangor. - Jegathisan A/L Sivanesan
