Enthusiastic response to National Sports Day

Kuala Lumpur: The 2017 National Sports Day (NSD2017) which is celebrated annually on the second Saturday of October has received encouraging and enthusiastic response throughout the country. The third edition held Saturday involved 3,786 events by state Youth and Sports Departments, 421 events by schools, 110 events by ministries, 100 events by associations, 37 events by institutions, 26 by private sector and 25 events held overseas.

NSD2017 was organised on a large scale at the compound of the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil with 30 events while the cycling and running events attracted 15,000 participants.

The celebration was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who arrived in sports attire.

In SABAH, more than 10,000 people were at Tawau Municipal Field with SEA Games athletes Jellson Jabilin, Gabriel Gilbert Daim, Fathin Faqihah as well as 2017 Muay Thai world junior champion, Daniel Fiedieans Maideh for NSD celebration.

In LABUAN, NSD was celebrated at Dataran Labuan by more than 7,000 people including Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli , Senator Datuk Bashir Alias, government department heads community leaders and residents.

Among the activities were various runs and walks, Eco Challenge - HSN Adventure Race, Family Zone , Fitness Zone, Self-Defence Zone, as well as telematches for various groups including disabled people.

In TERENGGANU, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi opened the state level NSD simultaneously with the whole country at Dataran Dewan Merdeka by launching the Negaraku Expression programme with about 5,000 Terengganu residents.

Also present were Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak and his deputy Datuk Jailani Johari, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, Terengganu state secretary, Datuk Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail and Terengganu State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong.

The event began with exercises followed by the Larian Bendera Negaraku, five-a-side football, tug of war, silat and taekwando demonstrations as well as recreational games.

In PUTRAJAYA, the Education Ministry held a ministry fitness programme at national level with 17,000 participants comprising headmasters and students from schools around Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor as well as the Teacher Education Institutes and matriculation colleges.

The programme themed Muhibbah was opened by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid with 150 athletes and teachers who brought honours to Malaysia at the 29th SEA Games (KL2017).

Among the activities organised were aerobics, five kilometre walk, basketball, rope skipping and dodgeball.

Also held at the compound of Putrajaya in conjunction with NSD were a three-kilometre sarong run by 300 Tourism and Culture Ministry staff as well as more than 3,000 people including 1,680 children in the 2017 Putrajaya Parliament Children Carnival at Mokhtar Dahari Court at Precinct 18 Futsal Complex. – Bernama
