Ranau: Two adolescent sisters are feared to have drowned in a nearby river in a village about 55km from Ranau Town. They have been missing since Friday night.

The sisters, aged 13 and 11, were believed to have gone out to the nearby woods that evening, but failed to return home, prompting their parents to contact the Ranau Fire and Rescue Department for assistance.

Department Chief Jimmy Lagung said his divers are currently scouring the base of the Sungai Sawan along Kg Wayan.

"We received a distress call at about 8.30pm Friday. Our department responded by deploying utility vehicles manned by three personnel to the location.

"At the location, we recorded the identification of both victims and calmed the family down.

Our efforts were then focused on looking for both along the river banks considering it was pitch dark at the location.

"The condition at the site forced our team to suspend the search and rescue at 10.47pm and decided to continue the search the next day," he said.

Jimmy on Saturday said search and rescue operation began early with three more personnel at the scene and along with them, two scuba units from Kota Kinabalu. They were also assisted by villagers. - Clarence G Dol
