RM70m polytech for Kota Belud
Kota Belud: Kota Belud will have a polytechnic by 2021 and allow youths in the district to have more opportunities to further their education and acquire technical and vocational skills.Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan said "Politeknik Kota Belud", which is estimated to cost RM70 million, would be built in Kampung Kesapang on 12.1 hectares.

He said the groundbreaking ceremony would be held at the end of this year.

"Kota Belud does not yet have a public higher education institution and therefore rather left behind, compared to other districts such as Kota Marudu and Kudat. Alhamdulillah, the Government has decided to provide allocation to build Politeknik Kota Belud.

"Land reclamation is being carried out and the construction would take about two years; by 2021, Kota Belud could stand tall with a modern polytechnic of its own," he told reporters after visiting the project site, here, Saturday.

Abdul Rahman, who is also Kota Belud MP, said the polytechnic could accommodate more than 1,000 students and will initially accept 500 for its first intake.

On clean water supply in the district, Rahman said treated water coverage is almost 69 per cent.

He said the situation had vastly improved compared to 10 years ago, after the Government spent hundreds of millions of ringgit to upgrade water supply services in Kota Belud.

"This included the construction of a new water treatment plant and provision of a bore-hole pump to boost the water pressure," he said after surveying ongoing works to deepen Sungai Tempasuk, near Kampung Bobot, here.

Deepening the river was part of the Government's flood mitigation measures for the district, he said, adding that two more rivers, Sungai Kadamaian and Sungai Gurung-Gurung, would also be deepened, at a cost of about RM80 million.

Abdul Rahman said other steps taken by the Government to prevent floods in the district included building flood barriers and watercourses with the cooperation of relevant departments and agencies.

"We are making every effort to resolve the flood problem and I hope residents here will remain patient," he said.

He attributed the frequent incidents of flood in the district to the earthquake in Ranau in 2015, saying hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand, rocks and other debris flowed downstream, filling the rivers, rendering them shallow and flowing unsmoothly.
