Shafie's brother remanded

Kota Kinabalu: An Umno politician cum younger brother of opposition Parti Warisan Sabah President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal was remanded four days to assist in investigations into the alleged abuse of RM1.5 billion in Federal funds meant for rural projects in Sabah.Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie ordered the assemblyman to be remanded starting from Wednesday after granting the application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Rozanna Abdul Hadi together with DPP Rustam Sanip and Investigating Officer Mohd Faliq Basaruddin from MACC applied for seven days remand.

Counsel Edward Paul who was assisted by counsel Peter Lee, representing the politician, asked for short days of remand.

The politician was remanded to facilitate the investigation under under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The politician, clad in a grey jacket and an orange MACC lock-up shirt, was escorted into the courtroom at 10.40am and the proceedings ended at 11.44am.

During the proceedings, only the politician's family members were allowed to enter the courtroom.

The police had tightly secured the court building since morning as only reporters with media cards and authorised persons were allowed to enter the building.

The politician's supporters were prohibited from entering the court building.

So far, nine individuals including the assemblyman were detained by MACC to assist into the investigation and six of them had been released on MACC bail. - Cynthia D Baga
