Tawau: Tawau Umno Youth Chief Ariffin Kassim, who was released from detention by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Tuesday, returned home as an unhappy man, saying he had been made to look like a criminal when he was detained. He said he should not have been handcuffed and asked to wear an orange shirt because he was only detained to assist in the investigation and not as an arrested criminal.Demanding the MACC to revise its Standard Operating Procedure in detaining individuals like him, Ariffin said the way he was detained had tarnished his image as a politician and the reputation of Umno Youth.

According to him, the public would see him as a criminal whereas, in fact, he had voluntarily and gentlemanly come to MACC's office to lend his assistance in the investigation."The way I've been treated was unfair. I came voluntarily because I was curious to know what they needed to know from me. I cooperated from day one," he said shortly after arriving from Kota Kinabalu. He also stressed that any person remains innocent until proven guilty, and until then must not be treated as a criminal in the eyes of the public. He suggested that MACC's current practice in treating individuals who are called to assist in an investigation can be seen as violating certain core aspects of human rights and therefore its SOP must be revised.
