Floods: Villagers allowed to return as weather improves

Kota Kinabalu: Villagers in several low-lying areas hit by flash floods and landslides were allowed to return home Saturday as the weather started to improve. Hundreds, however, remained sheltered at temporary disaster relief shelters in Penampang, Tuaran and Kota Belud as at press time.

In Penampang, some 34 people from nine families comprising 11 men, 11 women, six boys, four girls, a baby boy and a baby girl were evacuated to the Dewan Lembaga Sukan after a landslide struck Kg. Kolam Damai, Minintod (See separate report).

Eleven personnel from the Civil Defence Force were deployed to the scene following a call for assistance by Penampang District Officer Luvita Koisun at 9.50am.

In Tuaran, the water level of Sungai Lakang read at 3.4 metres (normal) and Sungai Labuaya 2.8 metres (normal) as at 5pm. Clear weather was reported with slight drizzle following bad weather conditions caused by the tail of tropical storm Lan in the west coast of Sabah over the past few days.

At least 21 villages in Tuaran were hit by flash floods, namely Kg Indai, Kg Rongolis, Kg Tutu Selupoh, Kg Tinuhan, Kg Dungang, Kg Gayungan, Kg Kegayungan, Kg Tinambak, Kg Laya-Laya, Kg Bundung, Kg Seri Bayu, Kg Tajau, Kg Sudot, Kg Termenong, Kg Sungai Damit, Kg Marabahai, Kg Labuaya, Kg Kionsom Lama, Kg Bombong and Kg Rugading.

Jalan Tinambak remains inaccessible to vehicles as at press time.

Also as at press time, a total of 107 people from 29 families remained sheltered at SMK Sri Nangka, comprising 29 men, 27 women, 33 boys, 16 girls, a baby boy and an elderly man.

In Tenghilan, 117 people from 27 families remained sheltered at Masjid Kg Bunga, comprising 16 men, 31 women, 28 boys, 33 girls, a baby boy and girl, one elderly man and six elderly women.

In Kota Belud, water level at Sg Kedamaian read at 0.73 metres (normal), while Sg Tempasuk and Sg Abai remained at dangerous level with a reading of 5.46m and 5.7m, respectively, as at 7.30am.

Weather was reported to be cloudy with at least 24 villages affected by flash floods, namely Kg Donggoi, Kg Marajah, Kg Gunding, Kg Sadok-Sadok, Kg Sembirai, Kg Lingkodon, Kg Linau, Kg Lebak Moyoh, Kg Bobot, Kg Suang Punggur, Kg Menunggui, Kg Song-Song, Kg Sangkir, Kg Karang Benai, Kg Kota Benai, Kg Kota Bungan, Kg Tawadakan, Kg Lentigi, Kg Tanjung Wakap, Kg Lebak Engad, Kg Keranjangan, Kg Menunggui, Kg Tawadakan, Kg Siasai Tamu and Kg Limatok.

At least nine roads inaccessible due to flash floods, namely Jalan Kg Marajah, Kg Donggoi, Jalan Lebak Moyoh Bypass Kudat, Jalan Kg Sembirai, Jalan Kg Lebak Engad, Jalan Kg Menunggui, Jalan Bobot, Jalan Kota Belud and Jalan Siasai Tamu.

A total of 272 people were evacuated to Dewan Masyarakt Tun Said, 332 flood victims are sheltered at Dewan SMK Agama Tun Said in Kota Belud, 365 sheltered at SMK Taun Gusi 1, 36 sheltered at Dewan Gopok Taginambur, 232 at Dewan Muhibah Tombol and 492 sheltered at SMK Taun Gusi 2.

Agencies involved in assisting the villagers are namely from the Civil Defence Force, police, Fire and Rescue Department, Health Department and the Welfare Department. - Sherell Jeffrey
