Published on: Tuesday, October 24, 2017

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu booked their place in the quarterfinal of the Chief Minister Cup competition after a hard fought 2-1 win over Kota Belud at Likas Stadium on Sunday evening.

The city boys needed the win after their opening scoreless group match against Tuaran at the UMS Stadium on Friday afternoon while Kota Belud had earlier beaten Tuaran 1-0 on Saturday.

The city team coached by Roslan Wasli started on the right note as they took the lead in the first half with Mohd Faqruazi Ahmad's opener.

However, they had a shock at the restart when Kota Belud put themselves in the driving seat with an equaliser, and it was substitute Yuseddy Yusiman that saved the day with the winning goal to ensure KK a place in the last eight.

Team manager Lokman Sunggim, when contacted on Monday praised the input from the players that allowed them to progress to the next round.

"The players took their responsibility very well and also displayed strong mental resilience throughout the competition to counter the immense pressure from their opponents.

"I am very happy with the result and I hope the winning momentum would continue during the quarter-finals.

It will be a much tougher task ahead but we are convinced coach Roslan and the players are prepared to face the challenge," he said.

Meanwhile Roslan said they will not let their guard down after the success and would continue to improve their game.

"The boys especially those from the President Cup and Youth Cup teams played well in the competition and I am very pleased that we managed to achieve our early target. Only the top two from the two groups in the last eight will qualify for the semi-finals. My job now is to ensure that the team will continue to improve so that we can finish at least in the top two."

The grouping for the quarterfinalists will only be known when the draw takes place at the Sabah Football Association office here on October 29. - GL Oh
