Sandakan: A group of youths have taken the initiative to set up a 'Free Read' club to instil the reading culture in the local community.Their mode of operation is similar to a mobile library where they would 'park' at public places around Sandakan town particularly Harbour Square.

Of its concept, club member Norleha Mohd Taufik, 20, said anyone or everyone could sit down together and spend time reading the materials displayed by the club, such as novels and magazines.

She said the club was mooted two years ago with a book and arts theme, and although membership was open to all, most were higher learning institution students.

"I am not sure how many members we have as we regard anyone who come with a book, read and chat with us as team members," she told Bernama.

According to her, the club also collected paintings done by the local community and sell them for RM35 each, with the proceeds going to the club's other activities such as Free School, Free Food and Free Market.

As regards 'Free School', club members go to areas where the children could not go to school and teach them how to read, write and count, while for 'Free Food', they provide meals to the needy around Sandakan town.

The club donates clothes to needy children or vagrants in its 'Free Market' activity. – Bernama
