Ricky and Fatin the favourites

Kota Kinabalu: Karateka Ricky Leong Tze Wai and archer Fatin Nurfatehah Mat Salleh look set to retain their State Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2015-16 title in the award ceremony to be held here at the Grand Ballroom, Pacific Sutera, Sutera Habour tonight (Tuesday).Both had tremendous successes in the international scene during the period. The 31-year-old Ricky won a historic individual kata gold in the World Karate 1 Premier League 2015 held in Sao Paolo Brazil as well as team kata gold in the 4th South East Asean Karate Do Championship in Laos while Fatin, apart from her three-gold haul in the Singapore SEA Games, also won team gold in the Asia Cup Stage 1 championship in Thailand, three gold medals in the UUM International Open and three golds in the Asean University Games 2016.

The other shortlisted candidates in the male category are Paralympian Didin Taresoh who managed to win gold in the men SS6 category at the World Badminton Championship in 2016 and also at the Irish International Championship, hurdler Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian, Mohamad Shah Ahmad (muay thai), Wong Co Wan (archery), Lee Kin Lip (archery), Adam Nicholas Lindbichler (fencing), Loro Wellkinson Peuji (weightlifting) while the other female candidates are Paralympian athlete Felicia Mikat who won three gold medals in the Singapore Asean Paralympic Games, Nurul Ain Sohrab (silat), Fatin Faqihah Mohd Yusof (track and field), Juliani Mohamad Din (hockey), Zaryati Zakaria (muay thai) and Audrey Japyus (karate).

Meanwhile, the candidates for the most promising sportsman are Arif Alfian Ariffin (karate), Christian Didier Chin Zao Quan (tennis), Paul Xavier Primus (silambam), Muhammad Syauqi Azmi (archery), Mohamad Rayyan Rizqin Mohd Kassim (muay thai) while Gwendollyn Gimus (karate), Marceeta Maryline Marcus (weightlifting) and Diana Tsen Mei Fung (archery) are vying for the most promising sportswoman award.

Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin will present the awards and also expected to be present are Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman, State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman, Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Radin Malleh and Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Masiung Banah. - GL Oh
