Tawau: The district's Kanazawa-Ryu Karate-Do Association is calling for Malaysian youths to join any bodies which emphasise on physical health and strong unity to ensure the country will continue to have competitive citizens in a more challenging world. Its Chairman, Abdul Gani Zelika said many of these bodies face the challenge of getting the younger generation to be interested in sports and parents play a crucial part in inseminating interest among their children.

He said, in the past they get membership from many of the youth but not today despite the many advantages such associations could offer in moral education and discipline apart from self-defence.

In this respect, he urged parents to consider sending their children to such institutions as it also plays a role in uniting the many races in the country as a unit and could bring them closer together for a common goal.

"Here we emphasise on respecting each other regardless of an individual's race or religion as demanded by our founder," he said during their first installation event.

The association which has over 150 members in the district also inducted Datuk Geoffrey Yee Lung Fook as their first honorary chairman due to his continuing support to the association.

Gani said Yee had been very supportive since the 90s and his staunch support had brought many benefits to the association today.

"Yee, who was also a former Member of Parliament, here is an important individual to our association and many others as well and our many successes in implementation came from their great support," he added.

Other members of the society who played a crucial role in the association honoured during the installation were William Cheang Vui Leong, who was inducted as a honorary member, Dr. Priyadarshi and Hong Chia Chang as medical advisors.

The event was officiated by representative of the Minister of Youth and Sport, Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Sarman Amat Simito.

The appointed committee for the association are Abdul Gani Zelika (chairman), Raymond Sung Kok Loong (vice chairman), Wong Siaw Fong (secretary) and Luke ChaungHau (treasurer). The committee members are Chong Nyuk Yen, Misba Masri, Stepanus Parulanan, Teh Vun Cheak and Cosmas Chieng Ching Hua. - Lagatah Toyos
