Tawau: The Immigration Department is aware of some foreign workers in the State having "blank passports" but do not consider it serious. The actual number of employers involved is not known, said Sabah Immigration Department Director Musa Sulaiman.

He said so far the State Government's policy has not agreed that passports of such employees be accepted, unless their employers send them home first before bringing them back to the country officially to work.

He said the issue arises when foreign embassies or consulates issue passports to those who had previously entered the country illegally with hopes landing jobs after obtaining passports.

"They have passports but are empty because there is no endorsement entry and the State Government has not yet agreed for empty passports to be accepted," he said, when met after a dialogue session with the department and the Eastern Sabah Security Command, Saturday.

Musa stressed that only those with valid documents from the Malaysian authority could stay and seek employment in the State.

In this regard, he welcomed relevant employers associations to refer foreign worker recruitment issues to the State Government as any decision needs to have the State Government's blessings.

He said on his side, there is no compromise on security issues and the sovereignty of the country.

He hoped that through the ongoing dialogue, they can convey the message to the people that stern action would be taken against any violation of the rules.

Earlier during the dialogue session, Esscom Commander DCP Dato' Hazani Ghazali urged business entrepreneurs to only hire foreign workers with documents.

"Please consider hiring employees with legal documents and the Immigration or Esscom will not 'disturb'.

"At least they have birth certificates if born in Sabah…likewise IMM13 holders who have been here for three generations can be considered for salaries due to the factors of life," he said. - Lagatah Toyos
