Latana's 'Fragments in Time' solo exhibition till month end
Penampang: The Sabah Art Gallery is showcasing talented artist Latana Schacenmann in her "Fragments in Time" solo exhibition for one month until Nov 30.Latana, whose father is from Kampung Guunsing, is an American based in Singapore.

Her collection of works range from photographs to sculptures which have been exhibited in Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Washington, California, Rome, Tahiti and most recently, at the Sabah Museum in June this year.

Her works include publications such as 'Barely Exposed' in 2011, 'The Pukhtar Monastery' in 2005 and 'Fragments, The Abandoned Villa Series' in 1994.

According to Latana, who is part Kadazan, "Fragments in Time" is an important exhibition for a number of reasons.

"First, I have come full circle from my art show in New York entitled "Sabah, Land Below the Wind" in 1982 to presently exhibiting here in 2017.

"Secondly, I have ended this exhibition with charcoal portraits of family members.

Some living, some passed away. In some small way, I want to honour them and give thanks to my relatives here, especially my father who gave me my Kadazan roots," she said.

The exhibition begins with a poignant image of a blind and elderly Rungus lady sitting quietly in a longhouse, a photograph she took during her first visit to Sabah in 1981.

"That first photograph, part of a series, initiated my discovery and love for art whilst finding my roots in my father's homeland. In fact, the photographs that I took in Sabah in 1981 resulted in a career that was not planned but that has stayed its course until now," she said.

In the exhibition, art enthusiasts may find her taking them through her life's journey as an artist.

There are large hand painted photographs and images of portals from around the world, including various sculptural pieces which reveal her childhood obsession with the world.

"These works, entitled "finding my Voice" and "Into the Light" encompass my sentiments about transitions, memory and loss…My mediations on life," said Latana.

Also present during the launch of her exhibition was the Cultural Attache of the US Embassy Malaysia, Michael Quinlan. - Leonard Alaza
