PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, visited de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital today.Anwar is recuperating at the hospital after an operation on his right shoulder joint to heal his shoulder's injury.

"I visited Anwar at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital today. He is recovering from a surgery several days ago.

"I wish him speedy recovery," Najib tweeted.

Anwar was reported to have injured the shoulder in an accident in 2014 in Desa Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.

He had undergone physiotherapy but the pain had become worse over time.

Anwar's condition deteriorated following an accident on Sept 22, when an escort vehicle rammed into the back of the prison transport ferrying him from Kuala Lumpur Hospital back to prison.

Anwar's son, Muhamad Ihsan Anwar, thanked Najib and Rosmah for their visit.

He asked for his father to be allowed to recuperate in a medical facility outside of prison and given access to all modalities of physiotherapy until full recovery.

"We want to express our utmost appreciation to the team of surgeons, hospital staff and prison personnel for the treatment and care of my father.

"I hope the manner this humanitarian issue has been managed so far will generate further goodwill on the part of the government to extend all the medical attention necessary to our father," he said in a statement.

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of sodomy.

He has maintained his innocence and claimed that the charges were politically motivated.
