Shafie a bigger hypocrite: Kurup
Published on: Tuesday, November 21, 2017

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup Monday called Warisan Sabah President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal "a bigger hypocrite" after Shafie had called him and other Sabah Christian BN leaders "hypocrites" for being quiet and not standing up for the interest of the Christian community in Parliament, BN Supreme Council, and in the Federal Cabinet.

According to Kurup, Shafie and entourage had instigated people in Pensiangan, Nabawan and Keningau during their political tours in the interior where there are a lot of Christians that Sabah Christian Barisan Nasional leaders did not speak up and protect the Christian community in Sabah.

Kurup strongly condemned Warisan Sabah for bringing religion into the political battleground in order to gain some political mileage at the expense of truth and facts.

"Don't use religion as a weapon for political mileage, and cause destruction on unity.

We have taken note of this and will consider further action to be taken against him," Kurup said.

Shafie had named Kurup, PBS president Joseph Pairin Kitingan, United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) acting president Wilfred Madius Tangau and Tan Sri Bernard Dompok as leaders who portrayed themselves as Christian heroes only in their respective areas. Shafie had asked why Kurup, Dompok and Pairin had not said anything to Umno in Parliament and in the BN Supreme Council.

"They are not saying anything (there), but in Sabah, they are saying things to show they are championing the religion.

"In BN, there should be a spirit of consensus among members. Even if one member rejects something, there should be no talks. But, Umno is now working with PAS which practices a severe version of Islam."

Kurup said Shafie is a bigger hypocrite as he was a Federal Cabinet Minister when the 10 Points Guidelines on Christianity Affairs were drawn up by Prime Minister Datuk Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak that all Sabah Christian leaders adhered to in consultation with Najib to avert sensitive publicity.

"The 10 Points Guidelines were drawn up even before I became a Federal Cabinet Minister in 2013, while Shafie was long there as an Umno member and an Umno Vice President. We always meet the Prime Minister on matters on Christianity when necessary without publicity, as well as the Christian Federation of Malaysia and others," Kurup said in explaining how Christian Federal Ministers worked for the interest of the Christian community. - David Thien
