Labuan wants bite of China cake

Labuan: The Chinese Chamber of Commerce has sought the help of the Chinese Consulate General in Sabah to have the island included in the promotion of Sabah as a holiday destinations by China-based tour operators.

LCCC Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii made this request when he with a full force of Chamber members welcomed Consulate General Liang Chaide who was here on a maiden visit to meet Chamber officials and launch the China Film Festival. Liang was posted to Kota Kinabalu about two months ago.

Wong said "Sabah has now become a popular holiday destination of China citizens and there were visiting the State round the year, taking advantage of the affordable direct flights from various cities in China, "We, Labuan could get just a small spill-over of these tourists it would certainly give a welcome boost to the local economy."

He said that at the moment, China tourists came to the island via Brunei landed flights and were ferried here on ro-ro vessels,

"From the feedback we got, tourists enjoyed their stay on the island and were impressed with the surrounding islands with clear clean water ideal for marine activities."

Wong also took the opportunity of Liang's visit to request the Consul to help draw the interest of China tycoons to Labuan,

"If we have just one or two corporate big boys from China, our economy could be galvanised through the investments and there are much opportunities in the manufacturing sector."

On a final note, Wong said that the Chamber had always enjoyed a splendid relationship with the Consulate and they valued it. He said the Consulate had help solve visa-related problems and also problems connected with Chinese nationals.

During his two-day stay, Liang also paid a courtesy call on local Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli and exchanged souvenirs with the MP. - Sohan Das
