Top sailors to converge in Sandakan

Sandakan: The Sandakan Regatta-Sandakan River Race-Sabah Closed 2017 which starts this Friday will see participation of sailors from Brunei Darussalam for the second consecutive year.A total of 58 participants from Sabah Sailing Association, Royal Malaysian Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu, Kinabalu Yacht Club, Tawau Yacht Club, Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) and Brunei Darussalam will take part in the three-day regatta, SYC commodore Paul Wong said on Tuesday.

"This regatta is the final race on the Sabah Sailing Association annual calendar of events which features top and promising sailors in the State," Paul said.

"Organised by SYC with the collaboration of Sabah Sailing Association, this regatta which is the biggest sailing event in the east coast of Sabah incorporates the Sabah Closed which is endorsed by Sabah Sailing Association as a ranking event for Sabah State Sailors," he added.

Paul also thanked the State Youth and Sports Ministry, Sandakan Municipal Council, Sandakan marine police, Sandakan district police, Royal Malaysian Navy, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, St John Ambulance, relevant government agencies, elected representatives, individuals and club members for extending assistance to the event over the years.

According to Paul, Sabah International Dairies Sdn Bhd (SID) is the official sponsor of Sandakan Regatta 2017 while Felcra Berhad and Alam Motivasi Sdn Bhd are the co-sponsors.

Present at the media conference were SYC Rear Commodore cum Organising Chairman James Leong and SYC sailing coach Mohamad Mostaman Ismail.
