Offensive FB statement: Perak man claims trial

Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old from Perak was charged in the Magistrate's Court with posting an offensive statement and pictures in his Facebook account with the intention of hurting somebody's feelings.Seevashankar Vickneswaran Tamalsilvan, who works in the eatery sector, allegedly used internet application services to make the offensive comment at 11.53am on Aug 16, this year at Bandar Baru Tambun, in Ipoh, Perak.He pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Afiq Agoes, Wednesday.

The charge under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act, carries a maximum of RM50,000 fine or up to one year's jail, or both, on conviction.The court set Dec 6 for pre-trial case management and released Seevashankar on a bail of RM1,600 in on surety.Seevashankar was represented by counsel Ram Singh. In another case, a 23-year-old Filipino was jailed four months for disposing of a stolen handphone.

Faizal Nasir admitted to committing the offence at 12.15am on Sept 11 at a lodging house in Kg Air.Meanwhile, a 27-year-old local woman claimed trial to a theft charge.

Receptionist Rosdiana Perinsos is accused of stealing food wrappers and tissues worth RM630 at 3.05am on July 6, this year at a house in Taman Starland, in Penampang.The court set Dec 7 for case management and offered Rosdiana bail at RM2,000 in two sureties.Rosdiana was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years on conviction.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
