Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah Chairman Stephen Wong Tien Fatt said Parliament is the best place to debate the Malaysia Agreement 1963."As MA63 is a legal document and enshrined in the Federal Constitution, Parliament as the highest legislative body should be given an opportunity to discuss and debate the status of Sabah and Sarawak within the federation," he said in a statement, Saturday.

"It should have been done long time ago. We the Pakatan Harapan had been calling for the debate to uplift Sabah's and Sarawak's rights and status in the Parliament many times. Yet it was the Speaker himself who turned down our resolutions," he said, in response to Dewan Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin's challenge to critics to debate the issue with him. Wong who is Sandakan MP countered Pandikar by proposing a special sitting in Parliament to debate the subject to show that he (Pandikar) is sincere.

"I tabled a private bill in Parliament twice last year for reviewing the federal constitution regarding the status of Sabah and Sarawak. It was rejected by the very Speaker who claimed himself a Sabahan.

It's shameful," Wong said.

Wong opined that the matter should be treated seriously and the government must have taken a position over the status of Sabah and Sarawak in the federation.

"I call upon all Barisan Nasional component parties in Sabah as well as Sabah Barisan Nasional MPs to make their stand clearly on Pandikar's remarks. And both ruling and opposition parties should debate this subject in Parliament, not outside."

He also challenged the Barisan Nasional MPs from Sabah to openly rubbish Pandikar's statement and hold a special sitting in Parliament to discuss this matter.

"Pandikar's comments are irrelevant. He is not representing the federation. It should be debated in the Parliament to get the official stance from Federal Government as well as the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional," he said.
