197 golds to be won at Saga

Sandakan: Athletes at the 8th Sabah Games (Saga VIII) will be competing for a total of 679 medals from events comprising 20 sports categories.Based on the total number of medals, there will be 197 golds, 197 silvers and 285 bronzes.

Saga VIII will be held here from Dec 9-15, however, three events – football, hockey and sepak takraw have begun before the official opening of the Games.

2,398 male and 1,635 female athletes will be competing in Saga along with 604 coaches, 293 team managers, and 130 contingent officials making it a total of 5,060.

Sandakan, the host of this year's games, will be the largest contingent with 439 athletes.

Meanwhile, athletes from 25 other districts in Sabah are also competing which are Kota Kinabalu (330), Papar (269), Putatan (144), Penampang (210), Ranau (268), Tuaran (236), Kinabatangan (144), Beluran (54), Telupid (70), Tongod (166), Tawau (343), Semporna (98), Lahad Datu (249), Kunak (81), Pitas (155), Kudat (90), Kota Belud (310), Kota Marudu (148), Keningau (338), Nabawan (162), Tambunan (125), Tenom (144), Beaufort (199), Kuala Penyu (81) and Sipitang (207).

Additionally, 1,011 men and women officers and technical personnel will be present at the event.

The Games is expected to be officiated by Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman on Dec 10. - Mardinah Jikur
