Cop jailed, fined for receiving RM500 bribe

Kota Kinabalu: A 42-year-old policeman from Sarawak was jailed six months and fined RM10,000 in default a month's jail for receiving bribe of RM500 from a woman.Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manaf handed the sentence to Lance Corporal Awang Mohamad Awang Sahari after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against Awang, Thursday.

Awang was found guilty of accepting the bribe from one Meriam Husin as a reward to release her and one John Cleent Leonie who were earlier arrested for not having documents.

The charge stated that Awang, who was attached with the Inanam police station, had committed the offence between 1pm and 2.30pm on March 11, 2010 inside a car parked near Lorong Ceri, here.

The offence under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 1997 carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and a fine five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Awang was ordered to serve the jail sentence from Thursday.

During mitigation, counsel Goldam Hamid asked for a light sentence saying that his client is a widower and has two children aged 14 and 16, to look after.

Goldam also told the court that Awang has served as a policeman for 18 years and it was his first offence.

According to Goldam, Awang had just underwent an operation and needed further treatment.

However, Prosecuting Officer Awang Shamsul Baharam Bongsu from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on Awang on the grounds that the offence committed by him had tarnished the name of the Malaysian Royal Police.
