Putatan teen bags gold

Sandakan: Eighteen-year-old Mc Royce Donovon Dagul from Putatan dominated the men's 75kg kumite category and bagged the gold medal on the second day of karate at the 8th Sabah Games (Saga).Dagul, a student of Labuan Matriculation College defeated Damien Godfrey from Penampang who settled for silver while Amirul Kahimi Abdullah from Sandakan and Whaledent Joe Walter from Kinabatangan earned bronze.

Meanwhile, Racheal Joe from Tenom bagged gold in the women's 68kg kumite category, Papar's Cornelia Jukip won silver and Kong Yi Theng from Sandakan as well as Daniela Padas from Tuaran both won bronze.

In the men's 67kg kumite category, Berryl Ashley Blantocas from Putatan brought home gold followed by Ethanjohn Lojitan from Penampang who won silver and Papar's Junior Henry with bronze.

Medals were given by the Sabah Sports Council Director Terrance Edward Pudin at Sri Lebaran Hall on Monday.

He also presented medals to the women's 61kg kumite champion Alviany Yantoni from Kota Belud, Arnie Abdullah who won silver from Nabawan and Venesa Ann Ervon from Putatan along with Tenom's Kruta Wong Vener who earned bronze in the category.

Meanwhile, the men's and women's long jump Group 1 qualifying events were the curtain-raiser for the Saga athletics events at the Sports Complex Stadium here on Monday.

Other qualifying events that were also held on Monday afternoon included the women's high jump and women's javelin.

Meanwhile, the heats (5) which included the men's and women's 100m as well as the men's 400m hurdles were the final athletics sessions in the afternoon.

According to Sabah Sports Council Director Terrance Edward Pudin, only one final was held on the first day which was the women's 3,000m. The night session began with the Group 1 qualifying in the women's triple jump, men's shot-put and women's discus.

The semi-finals (3) was due see the men's and women's 400m hurdles as well as the men's and women's 100m.

The closing events for athletics on Monday were heats (5) for the men's and women's 800m, women's triple jump and discus as well as men's shot-put.
