Sandakan: Sandakan's lawn bowlers successfully made up for their defeat two years ago in the seventh edition of the Sabah Games (Saga) in Tawau when their women's pairs and men's fours teams won gold in this year's Saga VIII at the Sandakan Lawn Bowls Court, Tuesday. The men's fours gold was won by Sandakan's Mohd Izzuddin Jufri, Mohd Nazrien Hasri, Afiezul Akhmal Akhimie and Mohd Nazrul Hasri while Nurnajmi Hannah Jali and Nurariqah Alham won the women's pairs gold.

Sandakan lawn bowls coach Nurfarahin Jamsari Jali, 22, said the victory was expected because it was their goal to redeem themselves after their fourth place finish at the Saga in Tawau.

"We are very happy to be able to achieve victory in this Saga after our previous loss in Saga Tawau," she said.

Nurfarahin said they underwent training and preparation for about a year.

Among the challenges were that her charges lost focus during training but she was happy at this year's Saga as they won gold.

The one-day lawn bowls session was participated by eight districts namely Tenom, Kota Belud, Nabawan, Papar, Sandakan, Beaufort, Keningau and Penampang.

The other two categories contested were the men's singles and women's triples.

The men's singles gold was won by Tenom's Mohamad Shah Ridzwan Manis while the women's triples gold was won by Papar's trio of Jashiela Fiona Jaluis, Nur Fazlina Azzemee and Means Haslyn Suraya Ag Husin.

Four gold, four silver and eight bronze medals are at stake in lawn bowls.

On Tuesday, in addition to the lawn bowls competition, badminton, cycling, archery, athletics, pentaque and tennis were also contested.

Another nine sporting events will take place today (Wednesday). – Mardinah Jikur
