ROYAL Sabah Turf Club Chairman Datuk Peter Chin (in coat) with club officials and members at the world renowned 80,000 capacity Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong last Sunday.Chin led a 90-member delegation from Sabah to introduce them to world-class horse racing, as the club plans to introduce off-course betting through a link-up with the Hong Kong and Singapore races at the Runway Club in Tg Aru soon.

While in Hong Kong, the management of the Sha Tin racecourse extended special treatment to the members, including the use of a VIP gallery to watch and participate in the types of betting offered at the premises, which stages some of the world's biggest racing events.

These include the Longines Hong Kong International Races, the Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Champions' Mile.

The two main types of betting offered to punters at Sha Tin are the Pari-Mutuel Betting and the Fixed Odds Betting.

In the Pari-Mutuel betting, the dividends are shared by the number of winning combinations of a particular pool with the payout calculated based on the final odds.

In the Fixed Odds Betting, the odds are fixed at the time of placing the bet and subsequent changes in odds do not affect the betting price. The payout is calculated based on the odds at the time of placing the bet.

The delegation watched 10 races that day that featured some of the finest jockeys on prized horses such as Joao Moreira, Zac Purton and Hongkong's own Derek Leung who won the Longines event, becoming only the second Chinese rider to do so in the race's history.

"This is one way in which the club hopes to expose members with what is going on in the international scene.

"We plan a few all-expenses paid trips each year including to the Selangor and Penang racecourses and at least to one international track like Hong Kong or Singapore," he said.

The delegation which spent three nights in Hong Kong, filled up almost half the seats on the AirAsia flight.
