Great success, achievements for tennis in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Tennis Association (STA) got its wish for the Likas tennis courts to be roofted after a five-year wait but is still waiting for its other request for the courts to be resurfaced.The good news continued with friendly matches with Sabah tennis and Korean Ladies visiting KK in January.

STA meanwhile, intensified efforts in scouting talent from among schools.

In March, Christian Chin, Sabah's most improved player continued his prolific run by winning his first ITF singles and doubles titles.

He continued to excel in overseas and home tournaments. He also partnered Azsseri Merzuki to win the national doubles tournament and was included in the Davies Cup representing Malaysia.

Other improved juniors were Nurshaneem Shamsuddin, Hiew Kee Jun, Harish Manoharan, Darius Wong and Ryan Chee.

The 7th Asia Tennis Federation tournament was held again in Sabah after one year with Thai Tanapatt winning the boys single and girls title went to Hong Kong's Yu Fung.

The 31st inter affiliates tournament held in Kota Kinabalu saw the host won all the categories at stake.

The STA AGM was held twice due to technical matters and Johnson Koh remained the President for the 11th year. The new Vice President is Christopher Lim from Sandakan with Tito Latoja the new Honorary Secretary, replacing Josephine George who retired for family reasons.

The Sandakan Coastal Bhd tournament attracted 80 players from KL and Kalimantan.

September was the usual date reserved for the 1 Malaysia Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor Team Tennis Invitational championship in its 10th year.

Hytech Blended from Kuala Lumpur won for the second time beating Wilson Meerkat also from Kuala Lumpur formerly known as Wilson Lakeview.

Tennis Malaysia National Junior Leg 7 was held in Kota Kinabalu with players from all over Malaysia.

Koh was also re-elected vice president of LTAM known as TennisMalaysia.

The same month also saw the Sabah Masters junior year-end tournament participated by 43 players.

Christian Didier Chin was enrolled into the Johan Kriek Tennis Academy in the United States in October which was done through the effort by the father and TennisMalaysia.

December also saw Nurshaneem Imann Shamsuddin joined the Nick Bolletieri tennis academy, and Nick also offered her to study in the States.

The year ended with the Sabah Games held Sandakan where nine districts participated in Tennis.

Kota Kinabalu won the boys team title and the girls title went to Sandakan.

In the individual events, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu won the boys and girls singles title respectively.

Keningau was the most improved district while Lahad Datu and Tawau also did well.
