Postman jailed six months for pocketing RM33,200

Kota Kinabalu: A 53-year-old postman was on Friday jailed six months for misappropriating RM33,200 belonging to Pos Malaysia.Cyril Ondoi pleaded guilty to an alternative charge before Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz.The court ordered Cyril to serve the jail sentence from Friday.

Cyril had misappropriated the money kept in a messenger bag at 2pm on Feb 20, 2017 at the Post Office, Membakut Branch, in Beaufort.The offence under Section 403 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between six months and five years, on conviction.The court heard that Cyril was entrusted with the messenger bag containing the money and other letters to send it to the Post Office, here, but did not perform his duty and, instead, misappropriated the money.In mitigation, his counsel Dominic Chew told the court that Cyril has six children and a wife to look after as well as his old mother.

Chew also submitted that Cyril had worked with Pos Malaysia since 1997 and during his years with the company, he was never investigated for any crime or wrongdoing.He also told the court that the money which he had misappropriated was used to pay off his debts with illegal moneylenders.

Chew added that his client was suffering from hypertension, cardiovascular illness and knee problem.However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man claimed trial to robbing a woman of her handbag.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
