Putra Jaya: The pioneer project of eCall, an electronic safety system which automatically sends out emergency signals from vehicles involved in serious accidents, will be implemented this year to expedite the delivery of assistance, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. He said project which involved the installation of the system on new vehicles to observe its effectiveness had gained positive response from several manufacturers.

"When an accident occurs, the response time is critical to ensure that lives can be saved," he told a press conference after witnessing the signing of the memorandum of cooperation (MoC) between the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) and Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) for the implementation of the project.

Also present were Miros chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, TM chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob, Communications and Multimedia Ministry deputy secretary-general, Datuk Dr Mohd Ali Mohammad Nor and Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak, who is assuming the duties of Miros director-general. – Bernama
