Tuaran: The Sabah Cancer Volunteers' Association (PSKS) will mark World Cancer Day here on Feb 4 at the Tuaran Futsal Arena.PSKS President Lawrence Libur Imui said the association's patron, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who is also Sulaman Assemblyman and State Local Government and Housing Minister, will officiate the event.

"This is the second time we are marking this important international day, but this year we will be hosting the event in Tuaran," Imui said.

"Feb 4 is recognised worldwide as the day for the global community to be united in their awareness for the need to fight against cancer as a way to prevent millions of unnecessary deaths every year.

This can be achieved by raising awareness and education about this illness and to seek support from governments, groups and individuals all over the world to come together to take positive action."

Imui, who is also the organising chairman, said another event, which is already attracting participants, is the 6km World Cancer Day Run starting from the Tuaran Futsal Arena.

He said the run would help PSKS in its fundraising effort while encouraging people to adopt an active and exercising lifestyle.

"Those who have not registered for the run are urged to contact us as soon as possible.

This is very much in line with this year's world Cancer Day slogan of 'We can, I can', which is also a call for commitment from all to fight cancer everywhere," Imui added.

He also said that following the run there will be various activities to benefit to the public, including a talk on the menace of cancer, a health exhibition, a free health screening (for blood pressure and glucose level, prostate and colon cancer), blood donation drive and pap-smear examination.

"Several NGOs such as the Palliative Care Association, the Thalassemia Association and the Sabah Cancer Association will also participate in the event," Imui said.

"PSKS volunteers from other parts of Sabah such as from Kudat, Kota Belud, Ranau, Papar, Keningau and Tuaran itself will be also attending, " he added, calling on all those in and around Tuaran to support PSKS for the noble cause by attending the event.
