Budding gymnasts get tips from national athletes

Kota Kinabalu: More than 100 young trainees took part in the recent Artistic Gymnastics Talent Identification (TID) programme at the Sandakan Sports Complex.The two-day programme was organised by Sabah Sports Council with the cooperation of the National Sports Council and the Sandakan Gymnastics Association.Sabah Sports Council assistant director (sport development) Allisa Alha said, apart from identifying new talents, the programme aimed to promote the sport, especially among young children in Sandakan.

"We believe Sandakan has many potential talents who can be trained to represent Sabah at national and international-level competitions," she said.Two national gymnastics icons – Farah Ann Abd Hadi and Ili Iliana Azmi were also involved in the programme to guide and motivate the trainees."The appearance of Farah Ann and Ili Iliana had given a boost to the programme's success… they shared their knowledge and experiences, not only on training but also the psychological aspects of preparing for competitions."The experiences that they shared are priceless.

"We hope more gymnastics trainees in the State to train harder and emulate their success."On the TID programme, Allisa said it is an annual programme under the supervision of the Sabah Sports Council.

"The programme is not only conducted for gymnastics, but also for all sports associations under the sports council."Identified potential athletes will be absorbed into the State junior athlete list under the Sabah High Achievement Sports Unit Programme," she said.
