Woman burnt to death after S'kan car crash

Sandakan: A 28-year-old local woman was burnt to death when the car she was travelling in burst into flames in a road crash near Wisma Yun Cheong Loong at Mile 9, Jalan Labuk, near here, early Friday.District Police Chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said police received a distress call at 5.30am and rushed a team from IPD Sandakan to the scene where they found a Mazda car was on fire.

He said investigations found that the Mazda driver, a 30-year-old man, and the woman were heading from Batu 10 to Batu 8 but when they reached the Batu 9 roundabout, the car spun out of control and crashed into the roundabout.

Due to the impact of the crash, the car skidded for some 100 metres before crashing into an electric pole and an unoccupied house.

Members of the public managed to extricate the driver from the car but the woman was stuck in the backseat.

The driver was rushed to Hospital Sandakan to receive treatment as he sustained injuries to his legs, neck and head.

The case was investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The Fire and Rescue Department, after receiving a distress call on the same matter at 4.20am, also rushed a team of six personnel led by Senior Officer Arshad Kadir with a fire engine and an emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle to the scene.

The fire was put under control at 5.04am and its cause was still under investigation. - Mardinah JIkur
