Alor Setar: Malaysian women's team lost to Thailand 2-3 in the final group stage matches of the 2018 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) at Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium Suka Menanti, Thursday. However, as a runner-up in Group Y, Malaysia still advances to the quarter-finals after recording two consecutive wins over Vietnam and the Philippines.

In the final match Thursday, Sonia Cheah failed to deliver the first point for the team after falling out to Nitchaon Jindapol 14-21, 15-21 in the 43-minute match.

Newly-paired Vivian Hoo-Tee Jing Yi upset the Thais Chayanit Chaladchalam-Phataimas Muenwong 21-19, 16-21, to level the point to 1-1.

Thailand took the lead after Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei lost to Pornpawee Chochuwong 19-21, 17-21.

Another new pair, Chow Mei Kuan-Goh Yea Ching put Malaysia's hope back on track after clinching a 21-15, 21-15 win over Puttita Supajirakul-Sapsiree Taerattanachai.

"Maybe because I hardly played in Super Series tournament, so they did not know my play style.

"But for today's game, we were mentally prepared. And we are ready to face any team at the quarter finals," said Yea Ching, who replaced Lee Meng Yean who suffered an injury after Malaysia Masters in January.

Malaysia's last hope Lim Yin Fun, however, failed to produce the winning point after she tamely lost to Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-13, 20-22.

Malaysia will meet South Korea in the quarter-finals on Friday. – Bernama
