Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Under-21 squad got off to great start with their opening day 1-0 win over Kedah at the Stadium Tuanku Abd Halim on Thursday. It was a good win despite their insipid second half showing and the team have Stanley Sulong to thank for as he netted the winner late in the opening half.

The team was given a corner and he managed to escape his markers to head in the resulting delivery at the far post with the opposing goalkeeper well beaten.

Hamran Peter could have scored the first goal earlier on for Sabah but his spot kick was saved by the Kedah goalkeeper who dived to his right and the ball bounced off his hand to safety off the post.

The home side dominated the second half with Sabah's players seeming to lose focus and their passes also went awry.

They lived dangerously throughout but luck was on their side as the home team failed to take their goal scoring chances by missing the target on several attempts.

Sabah's goalkeeper Sakri Masri also managed to keep his nerve and made several good saves including one at point blank towards the end.

Team manager Yassin Aman who was on the bench was happy with the boys' commitment on the pitch.

"It was a good result for us. I was expecting a draw as Kedah are a very strong team but to come back with three points was fantastic and a bonus for the team," said Yassin.

"The players played well and we controlled the first half. Kedah played a counter attacking game in the second half which we were well prepared for.

"I am glad the players all played their part to ensure a clean sheet and now our focus is on the Pahang game on Monday (February 26)." - GL Oh
