Kota Kinabalu: A field of 162 golfers will tee off at the 30th SGCC Open as well as the 4th SGCC Senior Open at the Golf and Country Club (SGCC), Bukit Padang on Friday. SGCC Captain Ng Loong Fan said the entries well exceeded their targeted 128 players.

"The response was overwhelming and we have 80 entries for the men open and 14 for the ladies while the men senior open we have 54 and another 14 for the ladies.

"In view of the large number of participants the open category will start early at 7am while the seniors will start at 11.30pm," he said.

He added that there should be an intense battle among the men seniors as former champions Peter Wong and Peter Tan will be taking part but defending champion Desmond Jong opted out while Rokia Daud will defend her ladies title. In the men open, title holder Christopher Daniel James is set to face a strong challenge from veteran Lee Ka Tung, Malcom Ting, Mohd Firdaus Sabri, Safaruddin Abidin and Leduin Jordan Mobijohn while ladies champion Jacqueline Lau may have to be aware of Mirabel Ting from Miri, Sarawak.

Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Masiung Banah is expected to grace the closing ceremony on Sunday. – GL Oh
