Kota Kinabalu: The State Industrial Development Ministry has targeted 1,000 e-Commerce entrepreneurs in Sabah by end of this year, said its Minister Datuk Seri Raymond Tan.Tan, who is also Deputy Chief Minister, said the ministry set the target as it is taking a step forward to push the small and medium-sized entrepreneurs (SMEs) in Sabah into digital economic activities that will grow and expand their businesses.

His Ministry will begin its new focus on digital economic development this year which is a continuation to the development of SMEs in Sabah. There has been an increase of SMEs in Sabah since 2010 from 40,931 to 55,702 in 2015 which proved that the people of Sabah have begun to rise as significant "self-job creator" to the development of our socio-economy.

"Tan Sri Musa Aman as Chief Minister has allocated about RM10 million to the ministry every year so as to help the SMEs grow especially those at micro stage," he said, when launching the "Championing Sabah's Digital Economy" seminar officiated by Musa, Wednesday.

Tan said Shared Services and Outsourcing Centre (SSO) set up in Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) which an aggressive approach adopted by the State Government to help SMEs to grow has launched a website at www.borneokaki.com that will market Sabah products on line which is part of e-Commerce effort.

The SSO centre functions as a venue where SMEs in Sabah could showcase their products, and it is equipped with facilities such as refrigeration and storage, among others.

"The local-based website is a new beginning where we develop and market local products and services in Sabah via online or e-Commerce. This is not only about marketing and selling SMEs products via online but the businesses that go across the board where business sector has operated their businesses via online such as the Grab, Uber, inter net banking, properties and various online payments that facilitate public," Tan said. - Hayati Dzulkifli
