Kota Kinabalu: Former State Finance Assistant Minister during the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) government, Datuk Wong Ping Chung (pic), passed away at the Kudat District Hospital on Wednesday. He was 82.

Wong, who last held the post as Kudat's SM Pei Tsin School Board Chairman, breathed his last about noon.

He was also a former Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department. In April 1985, he won the Kudat seat on a PBS ticket against Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat.

PBS President Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said: "He was in our party for quite a while and was one of our Assistant Ministers until he continued to play politics in other capacities outside of PBS.

"But I consider him as a friend, a very close friend. May his soul rest in peace," he said.
