U-16 squad maul Timor Leste 8-0

Kuala Lumpur: The national under-16 team began their campaign in the Jenesys Cup Football Tournament with a bang when they blasted Timor Leste U-16 squad 8-0 in their opening match in Miyazaki, Japan, Saturday.The squad under the National Football Development Programme were 4-0 ahead in the first half with goals by Najmudin Akmal Kamal Akmal in the third minute, Harith Naem Jaineh (27th and 31st minutes) and Fahmi Daniel Zaaim in the 35th minute, according to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Facebook site.

In the second half, the squad under coach Raja Azlan Shah Raja So'ib piled up another four goals via Alif Abdul Mutalib in the 60th minute, Fahmi Daniel (64th minute) while Amirul Ashrafiq Hanifah scored in the 73rd minute and during the second half injury time.

Malaysia have been drawn into group A with Japan and Timor Leste while the remaining nine teams were in three groups with group B comprising Indonesia, Philippines and Cambodia while Thailand, Singapore and Brunei are in group C and group D is made of Vietnam, Laos and Miyazaki Selection.

The championships is a suitable platform for Raja Azlan Shah to identify the line-up for Malaysia for the 2018 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-16 Championship which will be held in Kuala Lumpur in September.

The Kuala Lumpur tournament will act as an Asian qualifying zone for the 2019 FIFA World U-17 Cup with the top four teams qualifying automatically. – AFP
